This hymn concentrates on Mary, mother of Jesus, as she stands, stays and waits at the cross on which her son is dying. The lyrics were written to reflect the famous statue by Michelangelo, “The Pietà”, that depicts Mary holding the dead body of her son – said by the artist to be his best and most inspired work. The hymn is particularly relevant to services during Holy Week, although the lyrics compare Mary’s pain, watching her son die, with our own pain watching those we love suffer – so can be used at other times as inspiration.

The Pietà - the People Story

The first “Music as Prayer” hymn

The original orchestration of the music to this hymn was the last piece of music Alison’s father, Tom (co-founder of Watermead), heard before his sudden and unexpected death in 1993. When she first played the music to Fr John and her father, Tom had said the melody was beautiful enough to be “a hymn without words” and Fr John said how it had invoked for him the image of the statue of The Pietà. Within 48 hours Tom had died and a week later that first orchestration became the final piece of music played at his requiem mass, as his coffin was carried from the church by his son, son-in-law and nephews.

The lyrics were written a few months later by Fr John to reflect the suffering of Mary in union with the suffering of Tom’s family, and that of other families he had witnessed, as they watched their loved ones die. Sharing the music at retreats became inspiration for our “Music as Prayer”.

Cassette and CD – with family and friends

The first recording of this hymn was for the original "Mary our Mother" in 1995 and, although that cassette recording is no longer available, the track has since been digitally transferred to the archive gift recording, "Our Songs Gave Praise”. The track was particularly special as it was recorded by Tom’s family and friends – his daughter, Alison (on the keyboard), his son, Matthew, and daughter, Marian (the soloists), the flautist was his granddaughter, Katherine, and amongst the choir, of which he had also been a member, were his friends and his wife, Doreen.

Later, Alison re-recorded an instrumental version of the hymn to be used at retreats and this is one of the tracks on our "People of God" CD, released in 2004.

This hymn (carol) can be sung at any time during Advent and Christmastime, and is also especially suitable for Marian feasts and celebrations. It can be sung as a congregational hymn or, with its easy and imaginative harmony presentation, as a solo item for choirs at Carol concerts or services.

Maiden to Bethlehem - the Story

A Christmas Journey

When Alison played her original instrumental version to Fr John he immediately heard a journey within the background accompaniment - “A donkey,” he said “clip clopping along.” His subsequent lyrics are themselves a very careful journey, as they reflect only the detail of the Christmas story as told in the Scriptures, with none of the fictional characters, names or additional events that often embellish a Christmas carol.

It was sung first by St Theresa’s choir in Birstall, for a Christmas celebration and the vocal harmonies were arranged to suit the ability and range of the voices of this choir - a gift to them.

Cassette

The first recording of this hymn was for the original "Mary our Mother" cassette in 1995. This cassette recording is no longer available, but the track has since been transferred digitally to hold amongst our archives. We do not make the recording available commercially, although the original instrumental version has been played regularly at our Advent retreats over the years.
